Join Culinary Program Manager Jess Wagoner for a unique workshop experience: Cooking with Fire. In this workshop, we will use Appleton’s outdoor wood-fired oven to create delicious dishes inspired by what is fresh off the farm. Each class will involve a hands-on experience preparing the courses of each menu, as well as demonstrations at the wood-fired oven. Join Appleton Baker, Kami Turgeon, to learn the secrets to a perfectly flaky, sturdy pie crust and all the sweet details of making the perfect Apple Pie, with variations. Crumble top, lattice top, double crust, pie art (yes, that’s a thing!) – we’ll cover it all. Participants will enjoy hands-on experience making pie dough by hand and will take home a prepped pie, ready for the oven! Class will end with a shared pie a la mode.

Ann McCrae has 30 + years of art teaching experience.

Local artist, storyteller and teacher Ann McCrea will help kids use modeling clay to sculpt a rabbit or coyote! CLAY♦WORKS combines the magic of storytelling with clay sculpting. The 70-minute CLAY•WORKS program teaches kids from 1st-6th grade [ages 5-11]. Sitting in a circle on the floor, Ann tells a story which evokes their interest and creativity.

Family Fun Free Day

The second Saturday of every month is free for families with school-aged children. Families are invited to the Activity Center to participate in art, history, and cultural activities, and explore the museum using a Seek and Find. Each month has a different theme, from exhibitions to special celebrations. With September 2013's theme 'Four Winds' families are invited to the Children's Activity Center to participate in themed art, history and cultural activities that explores the Gloucester's Rocky Neck Art Colony, its artists and sculptors. This program is free and open to the public.

Art in the Shipyard!

Kids will create art at the Essex Shipbuilding Musem each Wednesday afternoon!

See, learn, find, create! Young artists are invited to enjoy drawing, painting, print making, and sculpture using the Museum's shipyard and artifacts for inspiration. All materials are provided for projects. All ages are welcome. Those seven and younger must be accompanied by an adult. A public exhibit of the art work produced will take place at the museum. This program is supported in part by the Essex Cultural Council, a local agency, through the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
