Once a hub of maritime trade and commerce, the fate of the port was intricately tied to the rise and fall of the town’s 18th century economy, and the fortunes (and misfortunes) of many of its residents. An amazing number of the plants at Pioneer Village are nutritious food, or good medicine, or useful in other ways. Some are native and were already here when the settlers came, others were introduced. In this fun and informative walk you will learn about these wonderful plants and some of their uses, whether they are wild and weedy or cultivated and tame. You will leave with an appreciation for our plant neighbors and the many gifts they offer us!
Local HW hosts the 5th annual LocalHW Fall Festival, where we bring together local small businesses, live music, food trucks, a beer and wine garden and fun family activites for a great day for our community. The festival takes place in Hamilton on Railroad Avenue and across the street at the Shops at 300 Main. Set sail on a full-scale replica of the famous 1812 privateer schooner FAME. FAME is a replica of a privateer schooner that sailed from Salem during the War of 1812! We sail up to five times a day between May and October from Pickering Wharf in Salem.
We've assembled a list of some of our favorite apple orchards north of Boston. Many offer pick-your-own apples and apples that are available for purchase by the pound. In addition to apple picking, many of the orchards offer trail walks, farm stands, baked goods, petting farms, country stores, hay rides and other child-friendly activities.
STEAM story time for children ages 6-10 incorporates science concepts with stories and activities. This month, join us to dig into what fossils are and how they are found! We will use tools like shovels, paint brushes, and tweezers to excavate our own dig sites. Be ready for a dino-mite story time!
