Children's Festival in Marblehead

The Children's Festival is just one event of many in the Marblehead Festival of the Arts

How wonderful to have kids view the world through a 64-color box of Crayola Crayons instead of an 8-color box, and the Children's Festival is here to help bring out the artist in every child. The Children’s Festival is a unique "hands on" arts-based program of activities directed toward children aged ten years and younger. . All activities are free of charge and all children should be accompanied by an adult.

Firefly Foray

Come Explore Maudslay State Park on a Firefly Expedition!

Fireflys, also called lightning bugs, appear for only a few weeks in the early summer to delight us with their luminous nighttime dance and light show. In June, the fireflies delight us with their nighttime dance and spectacular light show. Learn about the life of a firefly then go on a walk led by the park interpreter, to observe firefly behavior and see them close up. Bring a net or jar to catch fireflies. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bug spray are recommended.

Family Open House: Butterflies & Bugs

Joppa Flats will have Free indoor and outdoor activities for kids and families!

Joppa Flats Education Center invites families to join them for a full day of free outdoor and indoor nature activities, art projects, and live insects! July is the time to see such winged wonders as American ladies, swallowtails, monarchs, skippers, and more. At Joppa Flats, you'll see wild butterflies and captive caterpillars, learn about environmentally friendly products and practices for the home and garden, enjoy a guided nature walk on the grounds, and take home a fun craft or two.

Arts in Parks at Maudslay

Poison Ivy Eco Art at Maudslays Art in the Park!

Maudslay State Park has a strong connection to the arts. Join the interpreter for this art program incorporating natural materials gathered and assembled into a piece of art that will be reclaimed by nature. Photo cataloging will be used for the website. This program teaches cooperation, and creative thinking, as well as problem-solving, all in the great outdoors. This is a fun evening activity for the whole family!

Fall Family Monarch Conservation Program & Butterfly Tagging!

Come to Parker River Wildlife Sanctuary to learn about Monarch Butterflies!

Parker River National Wildlife Refuge invites families to join Katie Hone, The Monarch Gardener, for this fun and interesting one hour program about the monarch butterfly.  The program will include a presentation about monarchs with interactive role playing and live animals AND making milkweed “seed bombs” (to take home).  Meet, tag and release live monarch butterflies to the wild! This program is geared to younger children and their parents.  This program will take place in the refuge visitor center classroom.  NO preregistration for this program.

Monarch Magic

Come to Endicott Wildlife Sanctuary to learn about Monarch Butterflies!

Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary invites families to join them at Endicott Wildlife Sanctuary to discover the amazing journey of the monarch butterfly to Mexico. Learn about the monarch life cycle and the challenges facing its habitat. Find out more about butterfly gardening and create a paper butterfly that will spend the winter with children who live near the monarch sanctuaries in the mountains of Michoacan, Mexico. We will then work together as citizen scientists to tag and release several monarchs to start their journey south.

Manchester Public Library Seaside Knitwits Need Support

Manchester Public Library Seaside Knitwits are knitting and crocheting hats for Boston children (sizes infant through 18 years old) in need finishing and packing on November 4th, at 4 PM.

Seaside Knitwits is the recently, and loosely formed, Manchester Public Library group that is anyone interested in helping with this endeavor. All hats will be packed to be mailed at this  November meeting, in plenty of time for the Caps for Beantown (a registered 501c3 group) to receive and distribute in time for cold weather.

Kidleidoscope

Kidleidoscope at Maudslay State Park is a chance for preschoolers to explore the park, enjoy a story and make a craft!

Maudslay State Park has created this program for their youngest crowd! For the young set that loves nature, the park interpreter will lead a three-part preschool aged program that includes a Story, Craft & Walk that involves outdoor exploration. A different nature topic each week so come every week! Rain or shine. Wear appropriate walking shoes, sunscreen and bring water.

Sense of Wonder Walks: Ponds

Ponds and puddles offer endless hours of exploration and discovery.

Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary invites families for a great exploration of the pond habitat! Though they are small, ponds contain a rich variety of plant and animal life. Explore Waterfowl Pond for a close-up look at a place where hungry creatures are always on the hunt. Using nets and other collecting equipment, dip into the water, sweep through the weeds, and scoop up mud to discover the creatures that live there.
