Plein air painting is experiencing painting and drawing in the landscape. The practice goes back for centuries but was truly developed as an art form by the French Impressionists. Their desire to paint light and its changing, ephemeral qualities, coupled with the creation of transportable paint tubes and the box easel—the precursor to the plein air easels of today—allowed artists the freedom to paint “en plein air,” which is the French expression for “in the open air.” Space is limited to 15. Sidewalk Art will be distributed throughout the main areas of town and where other festival activities are happening. The Yankee Homecoming Waterfront Concert Series invites you to enjoy Big Band music by the sea with Blue Note Big Band! For many, the highlight of Newburyport's historic weeklong Yankee Homecoming festival is the Saturday night waterfront concert followed by a spectacular fireworks display. It will be our highlight this year, for sure, as we entertain the "Yankee Homecomers" from 7:15 right up until the fireworks at 9:15.
