Music ignites all areas of child development and skills for school readiness, including intellectual, social-emotional behavior, and language in overall literacy. It helps the body and mind work together. Music also helps with fine motor skills. Children who are exposed to music during early development are helped to learn the sounds and meanings of words. Children ages 7 plus are invited to this weekly workshop to learn how to create a foundation chain, make a single-crochet stitch, and finish a small square/rectangle. This free, 2-hour class for high school students and adults is taught by John Kotch, a black belt instructor in Isshin-Ryu Karate The class is designed for women to learn how to protect themselves when faced with uncomfortable situations and how to avoid them in the first place. The instruction will include techniques used in Isshin-Ryu karate (known as a street, self-defense style based upon survival tactics) as well as those utilized by various martial arts styles, military and law enforcement personnel. The following will be covered: improving self-awareness; hand and foot techniques; hold-breaks, ground techniques and basic weapons defense.

The Sisters In Stitches Joined By The Cloth will be hosting a Make & Take workshop where attendees can create their own fabric postcards at the Janet & William Ellery James Center at the Cape Ann Museum Green on Sunday, July 24. This hands-on event is presented in conjunction with In Her Mind’s Eye: Doris Elizabeth Prouty, an exhibition of quilts designed and sewn by Gloucester resident and self-taught African American quilter, Doris Elizabeth Prouty. Free and open to the public, seats limited and registration required.
Maritime Gloucester is partnering with Gloucester Museum School to offer an evening of family-friendly rowing! Each registration is for a family of up to 5 people to go out with an instructor for 30-45 min. Bring a picnic dinner and make an evening of it! All skill levels are welcome. Life jackets will be provided but if you plan to bring a child under 30 pounds you need to bring an appropriate life jacket. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.
