Earth Oven Bread Culinary Workshop

:earn to bake bread with fire at this 'Appleton Cooks' workshop at the Trustees of Reservations' Appleton Farms in Ipswich Massachusetts!

There is nothing quite like bread fresh from the oven. Join chef Elizabeth Walkowicz to learn how to make your own exquisite bread from scratch. Using both our outdoor earth oven and traditional methods, you will learn to make flat bread and a rustic olive loaf. We will pair with an Appleton Farms salad and cheese for a perfect summer lunch on the patio. This hands-on workshop includes instruction by a professional chef, printed recipe booklet and a tasting. BYOB beer and wine is allowed.

For the first time, the Great House at Castle Hill is open for tours on Labor Day.  Grab the family and take the Guest of the Cranes tour on the hour and our roof tour, Cupola with a View, at 11:30 AM and 1:30PM.  Unique gifts and food options are available at our gift shop and Grab and Go cafe with 10% off for Trustees members.  Last tour of the day is at 3PM.

Take a night hike with your family and enjoy the wonder of the Perseid Meteor Shower at Castle Hill with the Trustees! This is a late-night stargazing adventure for the whole family! The Perseids meteor shower is one of the main celestial events of the summer, with peak meteor viewing at up to 60 per hour! Join us for a hike along the Beach – and bring a blanket so you can stretch out on the sand for optimal viewing. We’ll keep our energy up with s’mores and lemonade around a bonfire. Pre-registration is required.

Hunt for fireflies with the Trustees at the Crane Estate in Ipswich Massachusetts!

An evening adventure for the whole family! Join us for a hike down the Cedar Point trail to the Pine Grove. We’ll look for the flash of fireflies in the fields that stretch to the marsh, along the fringes of the woods that line the trail to the Pine Grove, and in the dark of the Pine Grove itself. Did you know that different species of fireflies have different flash patterns? We’ll try to differentiate between our bioluminescent buddies and count how many different species of fireflies live around the Crane Estate. We’ll finish our evening observations with s’mores around a campfire in the Pine Grove!

Have you ever wondered about the moths attracted to your porch light? What are they called, what do they eat, why are they attracted to light and where do they go when the summer ends? Join independent researcher Deb Lievens for an illustrated talk about moths inside The Stevens-Coolidge historic house, followed by moth viewing in the gardens at night. Several "viewing stations" with black lights will be setup prior to the talk so that upon its conclusion, we'll have plenty of specimens to view under expert supervision.

In her sculptures, as well as installations, photographs, and films, Kwade occupies herself with the structural properties of everyday objects and questioning the veracity of matter, revealing possibilities for alternate realities, while examining social agreements and supposed truths.
