Join us for an easy, family-friendly hike along the trails and paths that cross the idyllic landscape of Appleton Farms. Please wear shoes appropriate for walking across uneven, possibly wet or muddy terrain. Bringing your own water is advisable.
Families try their hand at maple sugaring at Appleton Farms! Join us for a fun, hands-on workshop that kids and adults will love. After exploring our maple sugaring tools, use our hand drill to practice tapping a tree! We’ll go through the whole process from maple sugar tree ID to boiling sap, and we’ll be sure to play along the way. Our knowledgable educator will answer your questions so you can be a sugar maker at home. We’ll finish up with a story– and, of course, a maple syrup sample!
Join The Trustees of Reservations to welcome the sugaring season! On weekends in March the Trustees will host a special menu of breakfast items made with or accompanied by our own maple syrup from the maple trees right here at Appleton Farms. Our Culinary Programs Team, led by Jess Wagoner, will create a delicious assortment of items which will incorporate our delicious maple syrup. It doesn’t get any more local or any more delicious than this.
Visit our Sugar Shack at Appleton Farms for a presentation on maple sugaring. Learn about how maple trees are tapped and how sap is collected and turned into maple syrup. This presentation is free for all and runs from 12:00 – 4:00 on Saturdays and Sundays during maple season.
Join Culinary Program Manager Jess Wagoner for a unique workshop experience: Cooking with Fire. In this workshop, we will use Appleton’s outdoor wood-fired oven to create delicious dishes inspired by what is fresh off the farm. Each class will involve a hands-on experience preparing the courses of each menu, as well as demonstrations at the wood-fired oven. Join Appleton Baker, Kami Turgeon, to learn the secrets to a perfectly flaky, sturdy pie crust and all the sweet details of making the perfect Apple Pie, with variations. Crumble top, lattice top, double crust, pie art (yes, that’s a thing!) – we’ll cover it all. Participants will enjoy hands-on experience making pie dough by hand and will take home a prepped pie, ready for the oven! Class will end with a shared pie a la mode.
Get into the holiday season by creating your own evergreen wreath! Kids will craft their 16" wreaths by hand using local greenery, winter berries, fallen cones, holly leaves, ribbon, and more! Materials and instruction included. Parents are encouraged to attend but wreath making is for kids only please. As part of Art Week week we are hosting a special wool felting class for kids! Warmer spring weather means its sheep shearing time on the farm. But what to do with all that wool? As part of ArtWeek, learn about the time honored tradition of wool felting. We’ll start by learning how to wash and “card” the raw wool into soft fiber for spinning or felting. Afterwards, we’ll try our hand at making felt balls to be used for farm-fun necklaces. Wool, wood beads and decorative string will be provided, but feel free to bring anything special of your own to add to your necklace. We’ll end by visiting and feeding our three lovely merino sheep.
Let your creative juices flow! In this afternoon activity, we will create, build and embellish winter sculptures using nature’s bounty. Work as a family, a group of friends or let us pair you up when you arrive and work together as a team to add imaginative sculptural elements to the Stevens-Coolidge gardens. Cocoa will be served to keep your hands warm and busy!
