The Coast Guard Station in Newburyport stands as a testament to over 100 years of service to the opening of the Merrimack River and the coastal regions of from the North Shore to Southern Maine.
Considered home to the first Coast Guard in the United States, Newburyport continues to maintain the early light houses erected by the Coast Guard in it's downtown area. Now located on Water Street in Downtown Newburyport, the station is a base of operations for sea rescue of boats and yachts in trouble in a notoriously dangerous river mouth and surrounding coast.
Today's Coast Guard is an integral part of the National Security network and is considered an armed force under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security.
