Create a Woodland Creature for Preschoolers

Preschoolers will make their own version of a woodland creature at Mass Audubons' Joppa Flats Education Center in Newburport! Photo: Bill O'Connor

Join Joppa Flats Education Center with your pre-schooler for an adventure to collect acorns, pine cones, lichen, bark, and moss at Newburyport's Moseley Pines. Then, we'll put imagination together with these wonderful natural materials, and you and your child will create a new woodland creature friend with what we find! You'll go home with a new excitement for finding natural treasures and turning them into creative projects.

MIT's Open House is a chance to see some of the amazing things going on at MIT Museum in Cambridge Massachusetts! 

On the public tour of MIT, tourists and locals will learn about the recent tech boom in the area as well as MIT’s history and culture while visiting the main MIT campus, tour inside several buildings and experience the surrounding Kendall Square area in the 70-minute walking tour.

My Oh My Butterfly is an interactive program where your youngster can learn about butterfly habitat, food and migration.  Learn about different kinds of butterflies found on the North Shore, how to spot them and what will attract them.

Rita Gallant, Lead Field Teacher at IRWS will read Festive Occasions - Special Event Rental Equipment by Joanne Ryder. Let's find out what butterflies live in our area. Using sweep nets and hand lenses, we'll observe butterflies in the gardens and fields of the sanctuary. Become a butterfly as we learn about the life cycles of these fluttering marvels.

Eco-Art: Salamanders

Discover, explore and learn through art at the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary

Salamanders are often found in dark, wet places such as under a rock or log in the soil, while their eggs can be found in vernal pools. We will go for a walk, looking under rocks and logs for salamanders, and visit a vernal pool to discover where they lay their eggs each spring. Each participant will create a clay salamander to take home.

Each 90-minute session offers a structured series of activities including original songs, movement, dramatic play, hands-on science, and a thematic snack. You'll receive coloring pages, song lyrics, vocabulary, a fun fact sheet, and a suggested reading list in an electronic goody bag!

The astronomy & science club is for grade-school children who are interested in learning more about Science, Astronomy, and outer space. in the fall of 2014, kids will be exploring the Science of Superheroes! Can people use science to replicate superpowers? Can we see through solid objects, talk to each other with just our minds, become invisible? And how about flying like either Superman or Iron Man? We will take a hard look at our favorite superpowers, separate myth from what might be possible and create our own superheroes.
