Culinary Skills Series at Appleton Farms
This ‘back-to-basics’ series provides a comprehensive approach to the fundamentals of cooking as we explore traditional culinary methods & techniques to enhance your knowledge, skill, and understanding in the kitchen. Each workshop will focus in-depth on a particular skill set, with guided hands-on practice as we prepare seasonal dishes applying specific techniques. Proper knife skills, measuring, and kitchen tools will also be discussed, and all workshops include chef instruction, printed recipes, and a light lunch in the farmhouse!
Simple Cooking: 5 Ingredients or Less!
This workshop is all about keeping it simple in the kitchen! No lengthy recipes or special shopping list needed… we’ll prepare delicious, creative dishes using only a handful of seasonal ingredients and culinary techniques for simple success in your home kitchen. These recipes are sure to please all, whether weeknight suppers for the family or company dinners, and our menu may include dishes such as Escarole & Dropped Egg Soup with Parmesan, Maple & Mustard Crusted Chicken, Shell Pasta with Spicy Red Clam Sauce, and Sheet Pan Veggie Roasts. Class includes hands-on cooking, chef instruction, printed recipes, and a wonderful meal at the end of the evening.
Cedar Point Trail | Winter Wander
An outdoor adventure for the whole family! An easy rambling walk that will take us along the Cedar Point Trail to Steep Hill Beach with naturalists from The Trustees of Reservations. We’ll take note of how winter has changed the landscape, and how plants and animals adapt to survive this “dormant” season. Our wander will end in the Pine Grove, where we’ll warm up with hot chocolate around a campfire.
Chinese New Year Celebration in Ipswich
Celebrate the Year of the Dog with traditional Chinese performing arts at the Dolan Performing Arts Center. In an energetic hour-long show by Boston's Chinese Folk Art Workshop , a variety of traditional Chinese folk arts will be showcased including the Dragon Dance, Lion Dance, Taiwanese Drums, Chinese yoyo and Folk Dance. Afterwards, everyone will have the opportunity to try out some of the dances and folk arts.

Making Tracks: Learning to Read Wildlife Clues
If you have ever seen tracks in the snow, sand, or soil and were curious about what made them, then this is the program for you! Refuge staff will lead you through the basics of identifying common animals through the clues that they leave behind. A brief introduction to animal tracks and other sign in the visitor center classroom will be followed by a trip to the refuge where we will look for tracks and attempt to determine their owner’s identity.
