The woods in winter are full of life! Bring your family to scout out signs of life around Riverbend headquarters on Saturday, February 24th, 10am-noon. Environmental Educator Emma will teach us four basic animal track patterns and lead a scavenger hunt for other interesting animal and plant signs around the property. Keep your eyes open for “chew clues,” scat, and tracks, if there’s snow!
Let’s learn about whales! Walk inside a giant, inflatable humpback whale to learn more about these magnificent creatures. Learning about whales is also a great way to think critically about what you can do to help the wild world and our oceans.
Join Parker River Staff for the week of February Vacation (Feb. 20-23) for our youth drop off program 9:00am - 11:30am. Participants will learn about the the wonderful wildlife that call Parker River home in the winter, including adaptations for survival, animal evidence, and winter habitats. Program includes in-class and outside learning.
Come explore what nature has in store at some of our most amazing wild places on the north shore. Our engaging and experienced staff will introduce families to local beaches, forests, and wetlands to make observations in nature, identify wildlife, and enjoy hands on science activities outdoors. Whether you're a painting beginner or a pro, join us to appreciate just how beautiful winter can be by painting winter scenes with watercolors. Local artist and Refuge volunteer Patricia Lane Evans will teach participants techniques on how to paint snowy landscapes and how to frame a scene. We'll also have time to make creative watercolor Valentines Day themed cards! All ages welcome, and materials will be provided.
What animal signs might you see in the winter woods? We'll talk about paw prints, scat, nipped twigs, feathers, and other signs of activity. You'll find out how to detect the size of an animal, the direction and speed of movement, and the age of a track, and we'll give you your own tracking pocket guide for your future adventures!
Join Hamilton-Wenham Recreation to enjoy the “Wolf" Full Moon with guided walks, treats, fire-pits and a craft for kids! Hike one or both routes, or just come out to enjoy a warm drink by the fire in the light of the full moon. Fire-pits, warm drinks, light snacks and a “wolf moon” inspired craft are included in the registration fee.
Parker River National Wildlife Refuge invites teens to join refuge staff and members of West Newbury Wild & Native for a workshop on the importance of collecting and sowing native seeds. Learn about local native plants and seed collecting, then rotate through stations to create 3-4 pots of different seed mixes to take home!
Teens are invited to the Parker River Wildlife Refuge to learn about owls! Join Parker River Staff to crochet a snowy owl. Using amigurumi, the Japanese practice of crocheting small stuffed yarn, we will crochet a small stuffed snowy owl that's great for desk decoration, keychain, or dangle. Beginners welcome!
Essex Public Library hosts a "Buildwave" STEM workshop for kids in grades K-7! Buildwave is a creative building program that feels like a video game! Over the course of this workshop, students create with over a dozen different building materials including "Lego" "PlusPlus" and custom-made Buildwave materials. The workshop is structured like a video game, with an audiovisual setup featuring animations and music that guide students through the different building waves.
