The Gold Star Run for Honor is a 5k, 10k, kids fun run or 1 Mile Walk to honor the memory of a local Saugus veteran. Scott J. Procopio was on his second deployment as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, having previously served in Fallujah in 2005. He was killed in action as a result of a roadside bomb on the morning of April 2, 2006 in Ramadi Iraq.
Proceeds from race registrations and donations will go to the CPL Scott J. Procopio Memorial Scholarship Fund. The purpose of the fund is to provide educational scholarships and assistance to deserving members of area schools, and to provide educational scholarships and opportunities to the children, siblings and spouses of members of the United States Armed Forces who have been killed in combat operations. We have been awarding annual scholarships to graduating local seniors in memory of Cpl. Procopio since 2006, with fifteen annual scholarships awarded to date.
Kids Fun Run Course: This 1/4 mile Kids Fun Run is targeted for those 8 and under starting at 8am. Pre-registered kids will be guaranteed a t-shirt. The run will start right at the closed off rotary and will finish under the High5EM finish archway on Taylor St. If your child is 8 & under and wishes to participate in the 5K or 10K and the Kids Fun Run please sign he/she in the individual category so he/she will receive an official race time.
