Fiddleheads | Preschool Drop-Off Series

The Fiddlehead program at Appleton Farms encourages kids 3-5 to explore their environment in Ipswich Massachusetts

Spring has sprung! It is an excellent time of year for exploring and learning on the farm. We will be planting and harvesting in our garden, taking care of our animals and finding all the signs of spring that nature divulges. Join us on Wednesday mornings from 9:30AM to 12:30PM for a preschool drop-off series to educate your preschooler on farm animals, life cycles, plant parts, and farm fun!

Appleton Culinary Workshop: Chicken Pot Pie

Chicken Pot Pie Culinary Workshop at The Trustees of Reservations Appleton Farms in Ipswich Massachusetts

Is there anything more comforting than a chicken pot pie for dinner on a chilly night? Learn how to make this classic pie from complete scratch with our baker Kami. This immersive class will first walk you through all-butter pie dough, followed by utilizing chicken bones to make stock for the gravy base and finally, putting it all together with farm fresh vegetables to create a delicious meal. You will leave this class with the knowledge of how to get the best out of your chicken. Class participants will leave class with a fully formed pie, extra pie dough, and a shared slice at the end. Learn to make soups, stews and ragouts at this Appleton Farms workshop series in Ipswich Massachusetts!

Join Chef Liz in this hands-on workshop. Participants will cook with Trustees Grown Meat and vegetables from our fields when in season, and other local farmers’ ingredients to create an exciting multi-course meal. These classes provide an opportunity for participants to increase their comfort in the kitchen through new knife skills, techniques, and flavor profiles. There will be equal parts cooking and eating, and class ends with a shared meal, so bring your appetite! BYOB.

Make Valentines crafts from materials that we find along the shore at the Trustees of Reservations Crane Estate in Ipswich, Massachusetts

The Trustees of Reservations invites ages 12 and up to a valentine craft making workshop! This winter season, give a gift from the sea! From seaweed pressings to shell collages, beach treasures make beautiful greetings and keepsakes. Join this workshop to learn fun craft ideas and make marine art with our coastal educators. This program will start with a beach walk to collect coastal treasures, and then we will head inside for crafting. Materials and inspiration provided.

School Vacation Week Fire Pits and Winter Craft at Long Hill

The Trustees of Reservations' Long Hill Estate in Beverly Massachusetts is a great spot for kids and families during February vacation

The Trustees of Reservations invites kids and families to Long Hill and Sedgwick Gardens during February Vacation! During school vacation week, warm up with friends and family around a fire pit at Long Hill! Your ticket, valid for 6 people, will give you access to your own personal fire pit for 2 hours. We will provide fire wood, chairs, and a complimentary s’mores kit for your whole group. All the materials needed for a special wintery craft will also be included. You are welcome to bring your own snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.

Maple in the Barnyard at Appleton Farms

Visit Appleton Farms' sugaring operation and learn about making maple sugar syrup!

Maple Season is here! This special program for ages 3 and up will focus on the magic of maple from start to finish. We will discover this tradition by observing trees, tasting sap, learning the tools involved, and finally, tasting the sweet product. We will make sure to have time to visit our barnyard animals!

Once there, our staff will lead you in a solstice ritual of reflection and meditation around the fire, looking back on the past year and welcoming the new year, celebrating the end of days getting darker and looking forward to the increasing of the light. CraneOutdoors: Winter Solstice Hike in the Dunes

Hiking the Dunes at the Crane Wildlife Refuge with the Trustees of Reservations.

Join us for a beautiful dune hike to celebrate the solstice! Winter at the Crane Estate has much to offer, and while just about everybody on the North Shore has probably been to Crane Beach, the dunes of Castle Neck are a much less-explored world unto themselves. Offering one of the most accessible dune ecosystems north of Cape Cod, Castle Neck has over six miles of trails, traversing the dunes, maritime scrub forest, and beautiful beaches on both the Ipswich Bay and Essex/Castle Neck River estuary sides of the peninsula. These trails take you through Pitch Pine forests, up huge dunes offering stunning views of Choate Island, and by the varied landscapes of Castle Neck, including naturally occurring cranberry bogs.
