Family Friendly Fun at Parker River NWR

Family fun at Joppa Flats Education Center and Parker River National Wildlife Refuge in Newburyport Massachusetts

Bring your little ones for a day of family friendly fun! This is an effort to connect families to bring youth closer to nature through learning, exploration and creating art. Start at the Joppa Flats Education Center (10am-12:30pm) to meet tide pool critters. Then, bring your bagged lunch over to the Parker River Visitor Center for a picnic in the pollinator garden at noon, followed by creating a nature-themed mural (1-2:30pm).

Salt the Humpback Whale

Salt the inflatable humpback whale at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site

Celebrate World Oceans Day with Salt! Salt is a real humpback whale who spends her summer in the waters off Massachusetts and is among the most famous whales in the world today. She was first seen in the mid 1970s here in Massachusetts Bay and has been seen just about every year since. Explore inside a 40 foot inflatable replica of Salt and learn about her and her whale family-she has had at least ten calves since researchers started studying her. Winter Beavch Safari for all ages at Nahant Beach hosted by Massachusetts DCR

Did you know that the moon snail uses its radula (a tongue-like rasping organ) to bore a small hole in a clam shell and then sucks out the flesh of its victim? Join us to learn about the fascinating lives of animals of the seashore and to discover the new treasures of animal shells that have washed up on the beach. Please dress for the weather. For all ages. Bring water. Sunscreen is advised.
