Old Newbury Day Open House & ChipFest

Come to Spencer-Pierce-Little Farm for an open house and Christams Tree Chipping Festival in Newbury Massachusetts!

Come to Spencer Peirce Little Farm to celebrate the end of the holiday season with our Christmas Tree Chipfest! This year, we’re introducing a new event that highlights environmental sustainability.

We appreciate the community’s feedback on the annual Old Newbury Christmas Tree Bonfire, a cherished tradition that has fostered connection among our members and the wider community. We recognize the importance of this event and are committed to capturing the same sense of togetherness and celebration with our new initiative. Together, we can honor beloved traditions while embracing a more sustainable future.

Why We’re Choosing to “Chip” Instead of Burn

  • Environmental Impact: A single Christmas tree sequesters about 18 kg of carbon dioxide during its lifetime, helping combat climate change. By chipping trees rather than burning them or sending them to a landfill, we prevent this carbon from being released into the atmosphere, reducing harmful emissions.
  • Context: Burning 5,000 Christmas trees releases as much CO2 as the annual emissions of 20 passenger cars.
  • Community Health: Avoiding burning improves local air quality, particularly for those living near Spencer-Peirce-Little Farm, and helps prevent the risk of larger fires during droughts.
  • Sustainable Alternatives: Instead of burning, chipped trees can be used for mulch or to restore coastal sand dunes, supporting soil health and increasing resilience against climate change.

This year, spend the afternoon with us enjoying roasted s’mores, sipping and snacking on food and drinks from your favorite local vendors, and tours of the historic Manor House’s first floor. Families can join in the fun with face painting and winter storytelling. Bring your undecorated Christmas tree to be chipped by our event partner, Black Earth Compost, and take home a bag of mulch as a memento of your contribution to sustainability.
