Be prepared for peeper season this Spring! Learn about the temporary habitat of vernal ponds, what lives in them, why they are home to specialized woodland creatures and how to protect them. Live creatures will be displayed during the discussion, followed by an excursion into the park. Presented by Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team at Ravenswood Park! Space is limited, so please pre-register!
Come to Joppa Flats Education Center and begin with a 45 minute indoor introductory program in the Lookout (2nd floor) about Pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, and walrus). Then, we’ll carpool to an on-the-beach viewing area where we can see the harbor seals hauled out on the rocks at low tide at the mouth of the Merrimack River.
Create a family treasure by making your own Russian nested doll, matryoshka, with Russian artist and storyteller, Marina Forbes. While decorating the dolls, families can listen to the folk music from Russia and try the “matryoshka dance”. Adults, teens and children six and up are invited to this workshop on traditional Russian arts and crafts.
The sparkle of the full moon on a freshly fallen blanket of snow illuminates the forest like nothing else. With only the moon as our guide, we will hike through the sanctuary woods and enjoy this magical time. Since early January is often one of the quietest times of the year, we should be able to hear the hoots of owls and the howls of coyotes. The light of the moon will also allow us to catch glimpses of nocturnal animals that usually move about in complete darkness. We will then return to the Barn to warm up with some hot chocolate!
Teens are invited to a fun, hands-on cooking class with cookbook author Anna Tourkakis. Participants will prepare and then enjoy a delicious and healthy dinner featuring: Chicken Kabob in a Pocket, Yogurt and Cucumber Sauce, and Chocolate Dipped Fruit for dessert! Space is limited. Registration is required. Grades 6-12 welcome.

Eliza Goddell will be offering a Ukranian Easter egg (aka Pysanky) workshop. You will learn how to make beautiful eggs using a stylus, beeswax, and dyes. The workshop will begin with a demo and a brief discussion of the symbols used in this ancient Ukrainian folk art. Beginners are welcome. No artistic talent is necessary! For ages 12 and up.
Make some valentine cards, a collage, and more as we use art materials to create festive February fun on the half day, February 6, 1 PM! BOAT CAMP Nature School of Newburyport is will have it's annual fundraiser silent auction bash at the Black Cow Newburyport to celebrate a turn in the season as animals start their migrations back to the North Shore and awaken from their Winter slumbers! Proceeds from the auction will go to fund programs at BOAT CAMP Nature School.
Beverly Hospital is having a FREE flu shot clinic. The flu is a contagious, respiratory illness. If all of us take some precautions, we can help to prevent the spread of influenza this flu season. And it isn't too late to get vaccinated. Get the shot, not the flu! Note: this clinic is for people 18 and older.
