Glass Blowing Classes and Workshops

Glass Blowing Classes and Workshops North Shore Kid

Teen Vacation Workshops offered at Diablo Glass & Metal School.

The Museum of Fine Arts and Diablo Glass & Metal School have collaborated to offer Teen Vacation Camps. Located just blocks from the MFA, Diablo is easily accessible by foot, car or public transportation. Diablos facilities offer glass blowing, flame working and kiln forming studios.

All camps start with an introduction at Diablo and then a tour of the MFA's glass collection. At the MFA, students discuss the history of glass, different techniques and artistic inspiration. After that, the teens return to the studio to start their intensive glass studies. Teens chose between Glass Blowing and Flame Working and in the afternoon, they all work in the kiln forming studio to create fused glass pieces.

Four-Day Intensives: Monday-Thursday 9-4

The Teen Glass Blowing and Flame Working camps all start at Diablo, then a tour of the MFA, lunch, followed by the groups separating into the glass blowing and flame working studios for the remainder of the first day. For the next three days the students meet in their studios at 9 and work until 1, at which time we break for lunch. After lunch, the groups meet in the kiln forming studio to work on their fusing projects. Ages 12-18 Sign up for a class by calling (617) 442-7444

  • Teen Vacation Week: Glassblowing & Fused Glass

Class size limit: 9

Diablo’s experienced instructors will guide teens through a series of demonstrations and hands on exercises to begin to build their understanding of the medium. There is a three students to one instructor ratio in the hot shop to ensure safety and plenty of individual instruction. First, students will learn to gather, by creating a paperweight. Then they will learn how to introduce air into the piece to create a bubble. From there, students can make glasses and small vases. Teens who are interested in working in a team atmosphere with a lot of physical activity will enjoy working in the glass blowing shop. In the afternoon students will move into the kiln forming studio. Here they will assemble pieces of glass that they will heat in the kiln to create a fused piece of glass. Their first assignment will be to make some pendants. They will learn basic glass cutting techniques, along with kiln forming and color theory. The pieces they will create are coasters and a plate.

  • Teen Vacation Studios: Flameworking & Fused Glass

Class size Limit: 8

In this studio, teens will learn how to make beautiful glass beads at a stationary bench torch. They will be working on a mandrel, using soft glass, Moretti, to build these colorful glass pieces. After a discussion of studio set-up and safety, demonstrations will introduce students to the use of heat and gravity to shape molten glass. Demonstrations will alternate with working time. Dot application, marvering, stringers, annealing and bead cleaning, shall be covered. Flame working takes glass into a small and delicate world. Teens interested focusing on color and fine details will enjoy the flame studio. In the afternoon students will move into the kiln forming studio. Here they will assemble pieces of glass that they will heat in the kiln to create a fused piece of glass. Their first assignment will be to make some pendants. They will learn basic glass cutting techniques, along with kiln forming and color theory. The pieces they will create are coasters and plates.
