Balch Park is located adjacent to the historic Balch House. This is the most heavily-used basketball court in the city; it is the home to an adult summer league in addition to city-wide use. The baseball and soccer fields are used to the maximum by the Babe Ruth League and the Beverly High School teams in the spring and summer. In fall, the soccer field, which traverses the outfield, is used by both youth and high school soccer.
Renovations were undertaken in early 2000, funded in part by grants from the Department of Housing and Community Development and the Massachusetts Community Development Block Grant Program. Improvements included construction of a new parking lot at Balch Street and new tot-lot and playground area for school-age children supplied with modern play equipment. The two derelict tennis courts were resurfaced and enclosed with a new fence to create the street hockey rink. Benches were installed throughout the park as well as new chain link fencing along the first and third baseball field for improved safety.
