Saturday Morning Nature Secrets: Animals in Snow

Kids will learn about animals in the snow at the Mass Audubon Joppa Flats Education Center in Newburyport!

Let's celebrate winter as we look at this beautiful season through storybooks, art, and music. Weather permitting, we'll take a riverside walk in Joppa Flats' backyard and experience the frozen artistry of the season.  Later we'll create artwork that reminds us of the winter joys we found together.

Young at Art - Folly Cove Designer Valentines at Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester Massachusetts

Is your toddler an artist? Bring them to Cape Ann Museum for Young at Art on the second Thursday of each month. During this special Valentine’s Day session, we’ll explore The Folly Cove Designers exhibit, touch printmaking tools, learn a song with hand motions and print our own Valentine’s Day cards. Recommended for children ages 4 and younger with an adult. Free for CAM members or with Museum admission.

Owl Prowl at Stevens-Coolidge

Come to the owl Prowl at the Stevens Coolidge Estate in North Andover, meet an owl and learn to spot them

Enjoy an evening out with the owls. This guided hike will begin in the Stevens-Coolidge Place parking lot located across the street from the property. As the day falls deeper into the night and new animals emerge as others retire, we will walk together through the property in search of screech owls and great horned owls. Flashlights strongly encouraged. Owl Prowls will be held rain, snow or moonshine. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.

Animals in Winter

What animals do you see in winter?  Kids will learn about how animals survive the winter months

Where do animals go in the winter? How do they survive? Where do they find shelter? What food do they find? Who migrates, who seeks shelter in burrows or dens, and who sleeps soundly through the cold and snow? What signs can we look for of animals that are "toughing it out" on the refuge or in your backyard? You'll learn about fur, tracks, and scat.

Bird watching is enjoyable any time of year, but can be particularly rewarding in the winter if you've hung a homemade snack for the birds in your yard. So, join us this Wednesday morning to explore the world of birds around you through stories and a hands-on activity.

A snowy Winter day at Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary

Join Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary in the old tradition of fireside storytelling to pass the time through the cold and dark days of winter.  We will start inside around the warm crackle of the fireplace with a seasonal story, and then head outside to collect materials to make a nature bookmark.

Vacation Week Family Fun Days: Winter Wildlife

Find out where coyotes get food and how they keep warm through the winter.

Come be a winter wildlife detective and learn the tracks and signs of local animals. During the introduction you will make your own wildlife tracks ID guide and get to look at and touch real wildlife clues. Then we will head out on the trails to follow tracks and signs left by wildlife such as deer, rabbits, coyotes, beavers, and more.

Imagine, Sing, & Learn: The Moon & Stars

preschoolers will learn about the moon and stars at Joppa Flats Education Center in Newburyport

This parent/child program is designed for the creative, curious, and active preschooler. Each 90-minute session offers a structured series of activities including original songs, movement, dramatic play, hands-on science, and a thematic snack. You'll receive coloring pages, song lyrics, vocabulary, a fun fact sheet, and a suggested reading list via email.  In this session, we'll learn about the moon and stars!
