Sense of Wonder Walk for Families: Ponding

Each 'Sense of Wonder' outing will begin with a short introduction indoors, and then we will go outside for a walk. Topics for each walk are listed below, but we will stop and investigate anything that crosses our path. Join us for one or both of these spring programs.

Whale Alert!: Meet the Author

Whale Alert! author Angela Kakabeeke at Abbott Library in Marblehead

Join the effort to protect our endangered right whale. Hear local children’s author Angela Kakabeeke share her new book, Whale Alert!, about the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale. Angela is excited to work with Women Working for Oceans (W2O) and the New England Aquarium in sharing this story. In addition to the reading, there will be educational hands-on activities for children and adults, including whale science kits that reveal the unique characteristics of the right whale and the hazards that they encounter in our blue backyard.

Join the fun at the Trustees of Reservations' Stevens Coolidge Estate to explore their storywalk trail!

Looking for a way to get outside with the kiddos this February Vacation? Stop by The Stevens-Coolidge Place to follow our StoryWalk trail through the property! Our grounds are free and open to the public everyday. Simply enter the grounds, head left towards the beginning of the StoryWalk by the well behind the greenhouse and begin your adventure!

Wild Rumpus Walk

Come join the wild rumpus at the Stevens-Coolidge Place in North Andover Massachusetts

Note: this event has been canceled! What’s a Wild Rumpus you ask? Well it’s any sort of commotion with loud noise. It’s how we let loose and go wild. Sometimes winter can build up energy inside us and we simply must let it out! The Wild Rumpus Walk will allow just that. Beginning with a reading of Where the Wild Things are and building our own noise-makers, participants will then set off on a walk throughout The Stevens-Coolidge Place property to enjoy a good rumpus. This program will take place inside and outside, please dress for the weather. Recommended for ages 6-8.

Bark & Read with International Therapy Dogs

Registration is required for Bark and Read, a program that boost the confidence of young readers with Christine Christoforo and her dogs, Cayenne and Rue, who have been trained by Therapy Dogs International.  Registration is required for 15 time slots with the dog.  Stop by the Children's Room or call us at 978-412-8713 to sign up. This program is best for tentative readers and/or children who might be uncomfortable with dogs.

Follow Footsteps--Animals and a Hermit!

From 1884 – 1917, Mason A. Walton lived a hermit's life in Ravenswood Park

Adventures in Animal Tracking at Ravenswood Park--just like our Hermit did, over 100 years ago!  From 1884 to 1917, Mason Walton lived as a "hermit" in Ravenswood.  He closely observed, wrote, and drew about wildlife and animal behaviors.  He published a book in 1903.  We will walk the hermit's footsteps, share tales from his book, and along the way we will closely observe wildlife signs and determine animal behavior. Kids will meet Paul Korins, authro of 'The Magic Typewriter' at Abbot Library in Marblehead.

Children ages 8-12 are invited to an afterschool program with children's author Paul Korins focused on his most recent book, [amazon:1519110200:inline]. The novel is a time-travel, historical story, during which a 12-year-old boy is transported to the 1930s, experiencing the hard times of the Great Depression. He will be talking with students at the program about the hardships endured by families, and what life was like for children back then.
