Come to the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary to join in the reading of a children's nature story followed by an exploration in the woods, fields and wetlands of the sanctuary.

Rhododendron's are plentiful at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport!

Maudslay State Park has one of the best shows of flower bloom in the Commonwealth. Come and join the beginning of this cycle with a look at the two varieties of trilliums that bloom at Maudslay with the park interpreter. This month, we enjoy the bloom of Lily-of-the-Valley, Ghent/Exbury Azalea, Columbine, and Ox-eye Daisy. Wear comfortable shoes and appropriate warm clothes. Meet at the park headquarters at 74 Curzon Mill Rd

Ponding Adventure at Maudslay

What kid doesn’t like playing in the water? There’s many creatures that live there that we may not know about. Come join the interpreter for this interactive exploration into the pond and its many denizens. Appropriate for families with children. Wear clothes that can get wet and appropriate shoes. Meet at the park headquarters on Curzon Mill Rd.

Parent/Child Walkabouts: Tide Pool Trek

This parent/child walkabout focuses on tidal pool creatures and habitat.

We will be exploring the tide-pools of Sandy Point to learn about the relationships between the water, plants, and animals that live in this habitat. We will learn how to search and handle a wide variety of intertidal animals including  snails, mussels, crabs, and other small invertebrates. We plan to play a game that shows what life in a tide-pool is like, sing some songs and get a little wet too!

Life on a Saltwater Farm

Come learn about life on a saltwater farm at this weekly Saturday farm tour

The Paine House (1694), a yellow clapboard saltbox, is a remarkable and rare example of First Period (1620-1725) architecture. Three generations of the Paine family made their home here, including Robert Paine, foreman of the Salem witch trial jury in 1692.

Take a Walk on the Wild Side: Mud Flats at Joppa

Explore the transitional zone of the Joppa Mud Flats in Newburyport

Come to Joppa Flats Education Center where adults and children can learn about the transitional habitat of the mud flats at Joppa and spend quality family time in the great outdoors finding, observing, and admiring local wildlife. Excursions include a group game to burn off some steam, an on-the-water scavenger hunt, or a guided tour. We'll observe, investigate, and compare coastal environments and their inhabitants, both on- and offshore.

Fun in the Field at IRWS

Explore the fields at Mass Audubon's Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary!

As the weather warms, our fields become alive with activity. Spend an early June afternoon chasing butterflies, grasshoppers, and crickets with nets while taking some time to closely observe these amazing insects. We may also encounter some predators of the field, such as leopard frogs and garter snakes! This will be a hands-on experience the entire family can enjoy.

Kids 10 & up are invited to learn about Lady's Slipper Orchids in Gloucester

Explore and discover as we look for and learn all about Lady's Slippers - unique, delicate orchids, found among our rocky and woody Ravenswood landscape. Recommended for ages 10 and older. Meet at Ravenswood parking area.
