Vacation Week Flyby: Winter Birds and Backyard Treats

Cardinals are one of the birds you'll notice wintering over on the North Shore.

Our school vacation programs offer a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities while we keep minds active and hands busy during break! This Vacation Week Flyby will focus on common backyard North Shore birds that stick around in spite of Winter's cold.

Family Flyby: Deck the Halls with Nature

Free-flow learning at Joppa Flats is fun for the whole family. There's simple science fun with coloring pages and toys for ages 2 to 6; science experiments and group challenges for ages 7 and up; and outdoor exploration, seasonal live animals, and scheduled family presentations for everyone. Fly by for an hour or stay all day for family time that suits your schedule. There's something different to see and do with every visit!  This month we'll focus on nature in holiday decorations.

Study nocturnal animals at this Joppa Flats drop-in program

Hike the coastal forest with your child on this parent child walkabout at Joppa

This week we hike through a coastal forest habitat! We'll will focus on the importance of a sense of place as we explore the ecology, sights, and sounds of our natural landscape. Wildlife, local and migrating birds, collecting techniques, and environmental awareness will be presented in a fun, energetic format that adults and children alike will enjoy.

Parent/Child Walkabouts: A Wrack Line Wander

Explore what lives in the barrier region of the wrack line on this excursion!

Join Parker River National Wildlife Refuge this week as we explore the barrier region of the wrack line!  In every kind of weather, our favorite thing is to head outdoors to our spectacular coastal habitats! Each nature exploration will focus on the importance of a sense of place as we explore the ecology, sights, and sounds of our natural landscape. Wildlife, local and migrating birds, collecting techniques, and environmental awareness will be presented in a fun, energetic format that adults and children alike will enjoy.

  • The fee covers one adult and one child.
  • Not recommended for children under 3.
  • Participants should wear warm layers (it can be cool and breezy on the shore).

  • Wear Waterproof Footwear

Location

Meet at parking lot #1 on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Rain or shine. Please dress for the weather and wear waterproof footwear.
