SCOOP Lacrosse Spring 2013

Scoop LaCrosse Programs are geared towards girls entering 1st or 2nd grade

All 1st and 2nd grade girls on the North Shore are invited!

SCOOP Lacrosse is a developmental lacrosse program for young girls that teaches the fundamentals of lacrosse in a fun, positive environment.

Children's Chess Club

Kids can learn chess from a master at the Abbot Library in Marblehead!

Learn chess from a master! From learning the movement of each piece to tactics and strategy, this program will give beginners and experienced players ages seven and up a new appreciation and love of the game. Senior chess master Mikhail Perelsteyn will be teaching on Monday nights from 6-8pm.

Parent/Child Build a Bluebird House

Bring the kids and learn how to build a bluebird house at Mass Audubon's IRWS

Celebrate spring by building a bluebird house with your child. We’ll supply all the materials and instruction to build a nest box for bluebirds and tree swallows. These wonderful nest boxes also attract chickadees, tufted titmice, house wrens, and woodpeckers. A short slide presentation will introduce families to the natural history and behavior of birds in Massachusetts, and we’ll discuss where and how to place your nest box. Dress for the weather because we will take a short walk to look and listen for bluebirds.

Earth Day Coastal Clean Up on Cape Ann

Earthday for shoreline cleanups at Halibut Point and Coolidge Point Reservation!

The Trustees of Reservations invites you and your kids to come out to two of their most spectacular coastal reservations to help us celebrate Earth Day 2013. Take this opportunity to teach your children the benefits of stewardship and to have a great time as a family.  At Halibut Point State Park and/or the Coolidge Point Reservation, your help is needed cleaning up shoreline, building a bird box or a boardwalk, or simply drinking in the beauty of our special places. Call for details. Please register in advance!

Kids preK-1st grade will learn about marine mammals at Maritime Gloucester

Maritime Gloucester invites kids in pre-k through first grade to a vacation week session about seals and marine mammals - part of a week full of educational sessions during April vacation! What kinds of mammals live in the ocean?  How long can a whale hold its breath?  We'll learn all about marine mammals and how they live in their ocean habitats.

This Vacation Week Flyby will focus on the salt marshes, the important role they play in the ecosystem and the creatures that use them to feed, live and breed.

Adventure Day: Digging in the Dirt

Kids will explore the IRWS and find out what lives in the soil there!

Kids will get their hands dirty and dig into the science of soil at this April vacation session. Meet the critters of the sanctuary that call dirt home. Worms, millipedes, sow bugs, weasels, and voles are a few soil creatures that we will hope to see. Find out what it takes to make a garden grow, before preparing and planting your own take-home garden.

Spring Birding Basics

You and your child can learn the basics of birding at Halibut Point State Park

The Trustees of Reservations invites families to come learn birding basics while enjoying the woodlands and heathlands at the weather-beaten bluffs of Halibut Point State Park or the wide open spaces of Coolidge Point Reservation. Swarms of shorebirds can be viewed at this these prestigious coastal birding points! Meet at the parking area. Pre-registration is not required.

Wind Turbines and Sail Power at Maritime Gloucester

Maritime Gloucester invites kids in grades 2-5 to a vacation week session about Wind Turbines and Sail Power - part of a week full of educational sessions during April vacation! How do people use wind power?  Wind allowed seafaring explorers to cross oceans, helped Gloucester fishermen reach the fishing grounds, and even certain sea creatures use wind to sail across the water!
