WaringWorks at Waring is a long-established summer experience combining learning and fun. In the morning, children have the chance to work in depth in one of seven Majors: Theater, Visual Arts, Video, Science Exploration, Soccer, and WaringWorks Jr. We end the day with recreation and whole group activities. On the final day of the program, we have a presentation of what we have created together! Students age 7-14
(5-7 for Waring Works Jr.)
WaringWorks Jr. is a half-day program for children ages 5-7 who have completed at least 1 year of kindergarten.
Be part of fun and expressive theater company. We will learn a variety of acting skills and theater techniques, and then perform a play on the last day of the program. (We very well may write and present our own piece.) To be in the play, you need to commit to be at Artworks for at least the two last weeks of the program. (For those who are only able to do theater for less time there will still be opportunities to perform in smaller scenes.)
Try all sorts of media: painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, mask-making. Work on your own and on group projects such as murals and camp installations. Visual Arts Majors are known for their wonderful exhibitions at the end of camp and their help in working on sets for Theater.
Be part of a video team that writes, acts in, films, and edits its own series of video pieces. Prior video experience is not necessary but will be helpful (as will your own camera). At the end of WaringWorks, there will be a showing of movies we have made. Limited enrollment.
The soccer major of WaringWorks is aimed at creating well-rounded soccer players. Each week we will focus on improving fundamental skills, tactical vision, strength, speed, endurance and agility. We will also spend a good amount of time playing soccer and having fun!
Science Exploration is a hands on Major with four distinct week-long activities.
Week 1 - Robotics: Using Little Bits you will learn the basics of electronics and how to program your robots.
Week 2 - Flight: Learn and apply the basics of flight by making paper airplanes, kites, balsa wood planse, and rockets.
Week 3 - Scratch: Incorporate computer programming along with nature, sports, and writing. Scratch lets you program visually with "blocks."
Week 4 - Power: Using alternative power sources, such as solar panels, you will create boats, cars, and other devices.
